Biodegradable
The material under specified conditions will break down to mulch by naturally occurring microorganisms with no material residue within a predetermined time frame. Biodegradable products reduce the growing white pollution and land fill problem.
Compostable
The material will biodegrade and also show no toxic residues within a predetermined time frame. The differing factor is that the mulch obtained must be tested to ensure there is not toxic residue. This test is performed by planting seedlings and introducing earthworms to the mulch and recording their performance. Composting can occur naturally for example a compost heap in a household garden or it can occur under set specified condition in an industrial compost plant. International standards are used for test conditions see Standards
